Out of extra care for the participants, the turtles from the Văcărești Natural Park have two news: due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Sun Challenge, the only race through the park, has been postponed for next year. However, the good news is that Sun Plaza, in partnership with the Văcărești National Park Association, is organising Sun Trails this fall, a series of free trainings.
So, if you like to run in a safe environment, respecting all the rules, we are waiting for you to prepare for the Sun Challenge 2021 edition. Details will be available soon on our website.
Live the Sun Trails experience and sign up for one of the three training sessions for the 202 edition. Attention! To reduce the effects of transmitting the new coronavirus, places are limited.
Last year, the Sun Challenge edition brought 286 participants to the starting line and managed to raise 8,400 euros to protect the turtles.
From this money, the Administration of the Văcărești Natural Park carried out activities to sanitize the banks, ponds and the jetty and inland running route. It also placed signs and extended, arranged and maintained the egg-laying area. Turtle chicks are not good swimmers and definitely need specially designed areas (devoid of reeds and rich in food sources, with shallow water).
In Romania, the water turtle (Emys orbicularis), the only species of semi-aquatic turtle native to the fauna of our country, is classified as a vulnerable species, affected by habitat degradation, destruction and fragmentation. Populations are threatened by pollution, drainage, collection for marketing purposes and deliberate or accidental killing by fishermen or drivers.
